In memoriam - TIFF 2023 is dedicated to Sesame Street hero Bob McGrath.

Bob McGrath, a Very Important Resident on Sesame Street for 47 years, was also very important in Teaneck, where he and his wife Ann lived with their five children even longer than that. Although the couple moved further north several years ago, he is, as far as Teaneck folks are concerned, always part of our town and always in our hearts.

There was something special that came across when children saw and heard Bob on TV, and the qualities that came through the television screen were even more evident when he was seen live, year after year, emceeing Kid Flix at the Puffin Cultural Forum. His kindness and gentleness, his genuine love of the young people in his audience, his ability to engage them - to relate to them on their level, his talent and his joy in sharing that talent, made him someone who could be trusted - a role model for all ages. Adults who came with their children or grandchildren wanted to thank him, and take a picture with him.

Generosity is another word to use about Bob. The word no was rarely in his vocabulary; he was a willing volunteer in schools, for TIFF, for many important causes. He was a hero to those who knew and loved him from Sesame Street or in person. We mourn the loss of our dear friend, Bob McGrath.

Thanks to Ray Turkin and David Levin for the video tribute to Bob.

Presently, the Teaneck International Film Festival draws over 3,000 filmgoers each year. Films and talkbacks illustrate what TIFF is about – making untouchable topics part of everyday conversation by addressing racism, oppression, the environment, the LGBTQ community, women’s concerns, immigration -- stories of the little guy whose story is not often heard. With the theme, Activism: Making Change, the festival is an excellent starting point for fostering appreciation of differences, understanding all that we share, and encouraging efforts to help make the world a better place.
